Crimson Moon Builds: Gear, Arts, Boons & Angels
Data checked:
The four layers of a build
- Loadout (permanent). Set at the Loadout Station from purified gear before you deploy; up to four saved loadouts. Locked once the mission starts.
- Weapon Arts (on the item). Two mana-costing specials with their own cooldowns. The Art is usually what decides your status effect — see all 28.
- Boons (run-only). Three offered at every Nexus Gate, one kept; more on high-rarity gear; the pool grows as Mereda gets lore scrolls. Gone when the run ends — see all 91.
- Angel (per hunt). Aegis for melee force, Sunder (level 5) for ranged arcane; Angel Ascension replaces your Arts while active — see Angels.
Trinkets are the bridge between layers 1 and 3: each one permanently grants a single Boon, so a build's core effect can be locked in before the first gate.
Synergy families
| Family | Boons | Trinkets | Weapon Arts that apply it | How it plays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frost / Frozen | 8 | 7 | Ice Trail, Reaper Whirlwind, Winter Solstice, Winter Sun | Stack Frost until the target is Frozen, then hit a stationary enemy. Winter Sun and Winter Solstice apply it in an area; Frostbound Charge (sprint attack, 1000 Frost) and Frozen Vow (light hits, 200) keep stacks climbing. Sunder's Angel Frost line arrives at level 7. |
| Burning | 16 | 13 | Aura of the Burning Heart, Cardinal's Staff, Fire Burst, Fire Trail, Fireball, Homing Projectiles, Phoenix Flare, Valak Slam | Burning ticks on fire stacks and spreads: Cleansing Conflagration lights everything within 5 m of a burning target. Fire Burst, Phoenix Flare and Aura of the Burning Heart apply it; Crown of Cinders removes the self-damage from Phoenix Flare and fire trails. |
| Bleed | 8 | 3 | Bleed Projectiles, Gouging Throw, Rupturing Slash | The most-supported status on the wiki. Bleed Projectiles, Gouging Throw and Rupturing Slash apply it from weapons; Sanguine Strike/Slam/Slice add it to every attack type and Crimson Smite puts 750 on a charged heavy. Sanguimancer turns bleeding targets into a mana battery. |
| Poison | 6 | 5 | Avenging Pestilence, Poison Caltrops, Poison Trail, Sword of Rot | Poison needs stacks before it ticks, so pair an applying Art (Sword of Rot, Poison Caltrops, Avenging Pestilence) with Toxic Strike on light hits. On a Pale Horse poisons everything around you when you enter Angel Ascension; Patient Zero makes you immune to your own aura. |
| Marked (critical damage) | 10 | 8 | — | Marked enemies take more critical damage and Vow of Retribution raises that bonus by 25%. Brand of Judgment (heavy, 75%) and Hunter's Strike (light, 25%) apply it; Divine Mandate marks the room when you transform; Graceful Strike and Font of Conviction refund Grace and mana against Marked targets. |
| Rage | 10 | 7 | — | Rage raises your damage per stack. Almost every action can generate it — light hits (Sanctified Rhythm), sprint attacks (Momentum Charge), Weapon Art damage (Flow of Combat), kills (Trial of the Fallen), Elite kills (Frenzy), even drinking a flask (Consecrated Draught). Enduring Rage and Hardened Fury make the window longer and safer. |
| Parry & shield | 10 | 9 | Fireball, Shield Bash | The sword-and-shield line. Every parry can punish (Crushing Rebuke 150 damage, Frostbrand Seal 1000 Frost, Seal of Flame, Seal of Blight) and every block can too (Aegis of Frost 350 Frost, Holy Fire Aegis). Parries also charge Angel Ascension, so this build transforms most often. |
| Angel Ascension | 9 | 7 | — | Build around being transformed as often as possible: Font of Light and Wrathful Smite for charge, Angelic Strength for +20% attack power while active, Divine Mandate and On a Pale Horse for the entry burst, Guardian Angel for a co-op resistance zone. |
| Sprint attacks | 6 | 2 | — | A sprint into a light or heavy becomes a lunge. Relentless Momentum adds +20% damage to it, Resounding Charge refunds 25 stamina, and the three Charge Boons (Frostbound, Sanguine, Scorching) turn the lunge into the main status applicator. |
| Low-health (below 40%) | 4 | 3 | — | Four Boons switch on below 40% health: Last Bastion (+40 physical defence), Last Light (1% health per second), Second Wind (double stamina recovery) and Divine Endurance (double Grace recovery). Risky by design — pair with Oathsworn Return for a spare life. |
Boon and trinket counts are tallies of wiki effect text that names the family's status or trigger; some Boons appear in two families (Frostbrand Seal is both Frost and Parry). "How it plays" is our reading of the documented effects, not a tested rotation.
Two starting points that need no rare drops
Shield knight (Aegis)
The default Crimson Oath loadout is a one-hander and shield. Take every parry and block Boon the gates offer — Crushing Rebuke, Shield of Many, Aegis of Frost — and use the shield's Art (Shield Bash on nine of the sixteen shields). Parries charge Ascension, so Aegis transforms often. Weakness: heavy attacks are slow to start; the support team's own advice is to use them "when an enemy is not focused on you".
Frost stacker (either Angel)
The most-documented launch-day archetype. A Winter Sun weapon (Revenant Blade or Sword of the Lunar Sentinel) applies Frost in an area; Frostbound Charge on sprint attacks and Frozen Vow on lights push targets to Frozen, which stops them acting; Absolution in Ice then punishes Marked-and-frozen enemies. Sunder's Angel Frost line (levels 7 and 13) doubles down.
Difficulty scales the build, not the other way round
Higher difficulties "offer more opportunities for higher-rarity gear", and the Blacksmith's upgrade ceiling rises with your level (Rare at 4, Epic at 12). ProbablyMonsters' own recommendation after a failed run is to lower the difficulty, upgrade, and climb back — the build you want is downstream of the level and rarity you have, not something you can pick on day one. Build questions
Are there classes in Crimson Moon?
No. ProbablyMonsters says outright that "there are no traditional character classes" — every Nephilim is defined by gear, Weapon Arts, Boons and the Angel you pick. Up to four loadouts can be saved at the Loadout Station.
What is the best build in Crimson Moon?
Nobody can rank builds honestly yet: the game publishes no damage numbers and launched on 1 September 2026. What is measurable is Boon support — Bleed, Burning, Frost and Rage have the most documented effects — which is why day-one creator builds cluster on Frost (Winter Sun plus Frostbound Charge) and Bleed. Treat any "S-tier build" claim as one player's run, not data.
Can I change my build mid-run?
Only through what you find. Once a mission starts the Loadout Station is locked until the run ends or you die; loot equips instantly and drops what it replaces, and Nexus Gates offer a choice of three Boons each.
