Transcribed from the wiki's Level Unlocks table, which currently ends at level 15. "Drop Chance: Uncommon+" and its Rare+ and Epic+ successors mean loot found in a run will not roll below that tier from then on.
The milestones that change how you play
- Level 2 — the hub opens: Merchant and Blacksmith, plus your first extra life. Fire enemy variants appear.
- Level 4 — Mereda starts trading lore scrolls for Boons, and Gajov can upgrade purified gear to Rare.
- Level 5 — the Sunder Angel, the ranged arcane form, unlocks.
- Levels 6 and 12 — Aegis's Angel Fire (Lv. 1 then Lv. 2); level 12 also brings Epic upgrades and two more Blacksmith offer slots.
- Levels 7 and 13 — Sunder's Angel Frost (Lv. 1 then Lv. 2), and at 13 the drop floor rises to Epic.
- Levels 3, 7, 10, 14 — an armor set unlock each time.
What the developers count as meta progression
In Developer AMA #3, the team put a number on it: "over 60 unlockables" across categories — "entirely new stat upgrades, additional lives, full armor sets, upgrades to your angel", plus the hub services. The table above is the level-gated half of that; purified gear and Mereda's Boon unlocks are the rest.
Extra lives by level
Your life pool grows at levels 2, 5, 8 and 11 (+1 Max Lives each). Because a run only ends when the pool is empty, these four levels are worth more than any stat line on the table. How the pool works is on the runs page.
Level questions
What is the max level in Crimson Moon?
ProbablyMonsters has not published a level cap. The wiki's unlock table stops at level 15, but the Steam achievement list goes to "Level 30" (reached by 0.2% of players as of 2 Sep 2026), so the cap is at least 30. We will update this when an official number appears.
When do I unlock the second Angel?
Level 5 unlocks the Sunder Angel. Aegis is available from the start. Sunder's Angel Frost ability arrives at level 7 (Lv. 1) and 13 (Lv. 2); Aegis's Angel Fire at 6 and 12.
Does dying lose my XP?
No. Experience earned during a mission is applied to your level even if the run fails; only the bonus XP for completing the mission is forfeited.
